XII Mediterranean Championships 2009

BRIAN FARRUGIA WINS BRONZE
A Masters bronze was also clinched by Brian Farrugia, who made it to the Semi-Finals in the men’s division. Ten Mediterranean nations took part in the tournament, namely Catalonia for the very first time, Cyprus, host country France, Gibraltar, Greece, Italy, Israel, Malta, San Marino and Turkey.
Although Brian Farrugia had not made the medals podium in any of the three lead events, his good overall performance rewarded him with sixth place in the mens’ All Events table, and so a place in the Masters Final. He managed to topple his quarter final opponent, Greece’s Evaggelos Krizinis in two straight games, 213 – 190 and 211 – 200 to go forward.
Farrugia met the second Greek bowler, Ioannis Strathatos, in the semis and went a game down as the opener fell 209 – 199 to his opponent. Brian then tied the match with a scrappy 169 – 149 game two win, but fell at the final hurdle as the Greek easily won the decider 203 – 146.
Stathatos then lost out two games to one in the men’s final match, which was won by Lluis Montfort from Catalonia, the northern Spanish region whose Tenpin Bowling Federation has only recently gained international recognition, and was competing in the Mediterranean Championships for the very first time.
