"I got al little bit tense in the beginning but I kept on concentrating on
producing good shots and stick to my game plan," Neil confessed. "But I have
been waiting for this for a while. I had no expectations when I started, but I
did ask my wife to put a bottle of champagne in the fridge before I left home on
Sunday," he said with a laugh.
In
the women section Sue Abela the defending champion had no problems of defending
her title and with a big margin of pins she captured her 6th consecutive title.
With this win Sue broke the long standing record of Doris Camilleri with 5
consecutive titles.
From 1987 until now Sue Abela won a total of 16 National titles and one European title.
Sue Abela and Neil Sullivan will represent Malta in the European Champions Cup
in October in Turkey.
June at the SuperBowl saw the MTBA’s qualifying event for this year’s Qubica-AMF World Cup, which will be held in Toulon, France between the 15th – 24th of October. This is one of the biggest events in the worldwide tenpin bowling calendar, with typically in excess of eighty nations represented by their male and female champions. Malta will be ably represented by Mark Spiteri and Sue Abela this year, the two having come through to top their respective divisions with flying colours.

The World Cup qualifier follows a simple format, all bowlers playing three 8-game sessions, and the highest pinfall from those 24 games determining the male and female winners. The male division rolled off with a tough field of hopefuls, but day one saw Mark Spiteri take early control with a 1694 session including a high opening game of 278. He was narrowly trailed by Rankin Camilleri in second on 1672 and Philippe Vancell on 1601.
Spiteri held his composure, and position for the second eight with a 3344 interim total ahead of Camilleri on 3292. The third place holder changed however, as Kenneth Arpa sneaked in with a good 1667 set for a 3250 sixteen game tally. That’s how the top three stayed on the final day of the event, with mark Spiteri claiming victory on 4940 pins (205.8 average), although Rankin Camilleri almost overtook him at the last hurdle, placing second with just fifteen pins separating them (4925, 205.2 ave). Kenneth Arpa’s 4890 total (203.7) kept him in third place, while Justin Caruana Scicluna took fourth on 4763 pins.
Sue Abela was a cut above the rest of the ladies division from the offset, finishing her first eight with a sound 1658 total to take the early lead above Melissa Swift on 1566, and Joanna Attard with 1526 pins. There was some jostling for position on day two as Sue’s game dropped somewhat, although 1479 was enough to keep her on top with 3137 pins over sixteen. Attard advanced to second on 3026, taking a tiny two pin advantage over Swift on 3024.
Only a disaster could have stopped Sue Abela from winning the ladies event on day three, and she succeeded with a final 4739 total (197.4 ave) to take the glory. Joanna Attard remained second (4443, 185.1 ave), finishing just twenty ahead of Melissa Swift in third (4423, 184.2 ave). Tiziana Carannante finished in fourth place with 4205 pins.
May saw the conclusion of the popular MTBA Gold Cup at the Eden SuperBowl where 24 bowlers competed for the title.
The qualifying round consisted of 16 games for total pinfall, including any
handicap, from which the top six advanced to the round robin stage. After that
the top three qualifiers played in their respective stepladder finals.

With round one over, 2006 European Gold Cup winner Philippe Vancell topped the men's competition having played to a great 207.3 game average.
He was joined in the round robin phase by Leli Baldacchino, Dean Micallef, Shawn Bugeja, Aaron Belli and Philip Gruppetta.
Vancell's previous lead helped him to retain top spot. Also through to the finals were Micallef and third-placed Baldacchino. The latter, however, was forced to retire due to injury and surrendered his position to Bugeja.
Bugeja was carrying a 16-pin handicap as he met scratch bowler Micallef in the semi-final. That was not enough to see the substitute bowler through as Micallef clinched it 191-180, earning his place in the final against Vancell.
Micallef, as the underdog, had to win twice to claim the title whereas Vancell only needed a single game. Incredibly, the first game finished in a tie, 193-all, and a 9-10 frame roll-off was called by the tournament director. That was won 26-40 by Micallef to force the second game.
That was another very close affair but Micallef maintained his composure to clinch it 202-215 for the Gold Cup title.
In the women's section, youth champion Tiziana Carannante held the advantage after 16 games over Josephine Bonello. The other four qualifiers were Pam Demanuele, Melissa Swift, Liliana Said and Jade Cosaitis.
Carannante won three of her five encounters to stay top. She was joined in the stepladder by 2009 winner Swift and Bonello.
The semi-final mirrored that of the men in that it too went to a 9-10 frame roll-off, having finished 166-166 after regular play. It was Bonello who progressed to the final with a spare-strike as Swift followed her initial strike with an eight-count.
On to the final, Carannante kept her form for just one more game, beating Bonello 192-170 to secure yet another honour.
The two new champions will be competing in Cyprus later this year thanks to the support of the Malta Tenpin Bowling Association with the backing of Emirates Airline.
Team Malta fought back from a very poor start on Friday with a first game of 705 in the team event to capture the bronze medal at the Mediterranean Challenge Cup in Paphos, Cyprus on Saturday.
The last 2 games of the first block of the team event was more like a team performance with 828 and 766 and they finished in 7th place with 3 games to go on Saturday morning.
With a few changes in equipment and ball surface Malta started good with 804. Tiziana opening game of 151 was carried by the rest of the team, but than the beast came to life.
Bowling a 220 in
the
5th game and a team score of 800 took
Malta out of the bottom half with still a small chance of a medal.
Starting the last
game Tiziana left the 4 pin on her first ball and finished with 11 strikes for a
personal best of 290. The team bowled a 868 and jumped France, Italy and Turkey
to capture the Bronze medal.
Her next match for Silver was against Sarit Mizrahi from Israel. Loosing the first game of 180 against 205, she needed again to win the last 2 games to get in to the final but this time Sarit was the winner of game 2 with 227 and 211 for Sue and had to settle for a ETBF Bronze medal.
Sue Abela added earlier that week a silver to her
lifetime haul of gold and silver medals.
With one game to go Sue was in 4th place but kept her composure and did not
crack under pressure in her last game and claimed with a score of 1213 a second
place in the Singles. Gold went to Israel and Bronze to Spain.
Rankin Camilleri and Philippe Vancell are competing in the BEC in Paris to
gain international experience and to bowl with the best of the World.
Philippe
first entry was on Wednesday afternoon. His series of 1132 was below his
standard and finished in 33rd place in his squad. Carolyn Dorin-Ballard led his
squad on Wednesday afternoon with 1459 to move into 5th place in the overall
qualifying standings.

Our second entry Rankin had to play on early
Thursday morning with a small field of entries. Starting with a disadvantage
because two of his bowling balls did not arrived, his start was very good with
games of 221 and 267 but than lost it and finished with a total of 1197.
The lead was taken over by lefty Anthony Pepe from the USA playing in the same
squad as Rankin with games of 299 – 258 – 217 – 245 – 297 and 256 totaling a
staggering 1572, averaging 262 over six games.
Let’s hope Rankin and Philippe will have learned from there first entry and make
the right adjustments for there re-entry on
Saturday and that Rankin's missing balls show up in time.
Live television coverage of the final on Eurosport 2 is scheduled for Sunday, March 14, 2010, at 17:30-18:30 hrs (5:30-6:30 p.m.) CET
The Mediterranean Challenge Cup Qualifying Tournament came to a close today with a trilling final in the men's section. Until the start of the final came it was still not clear which of the 3 bowlers would represent Malta in Cyprus in April.
After 7 games of the final round Neil Sullivan of team Global Air was only 22 pins away of second place Justin C. Scicluna.
Dennis Mercieca was in the lead with 30 pins ahead on second place. With Justin finishing first, he managed with a strong finish to put a game of 205 on his score sheet, and Dennis a game of 179, that meant that Neil had to bowl a game of 228 to move up, but a six pin in the 8 frame stopped him in his string of strikes and finished with a game of 213.
The highest series of the day went to Ray Falzon with 1690 and finished in 4th position with only 54 pins away of qualifying.
In the woman's division Sue Abela and Tiziana Carannante where too strong for the other 2 woman Melissa Swift and Pamela D'Emanuel. Earlier in round one the number two of the woman in leading average Joanna Attard had to stop because of a neck injury.
The qualifying round was played over two days with all competitors rolling 16 games, after which the top six qualified to the round robin stage which was followed by a stepladder final for the top three.
Camilleri and Carannante both led their respective divisions from the outset. In spite of a couple of low games (167, 145), Camilleri was top on 1,575 after eight games and stayed there with a 3,114 tally from 16.
Sunday the finals where held at the Eden Superbowl of the MTBA Masters championship. The tournament was played over three days with the top 4 qualifying for the semi finals on Sunday.
